short interview
Q. Is it true that villains have the most fun?
A. I think so. Initially, right from the start, I wanted to play this role. I love playing villains. If I was going to do something like Mutant X I thought, 'Well, the best way to go would be to play Eckhart'. I enjoy playing him. I also enjoy sci-fi, so that was another reason to do this. I had played villains before and I'd done sci-fi before, but I hadn't played really combined the two and played too many sci-fi villains.
Q. What about Eckhart's look? He's almost a cross between Bowie and Warhol...
A. I have got a strange look, which is intriguing. It's almost like hiding behind a mask, and that's a fun thing to play with. And you're right; he looks almost exactly like Bowie in Basquiat. Eckhart was originally going to have about a quarter-inch of silicon over his face, but it didn't work with the camera, so we tried different things. We went with different versions of the wig and the costuming was a whole other, separate thing after that. So his look really wasn't planned. It evolved. It was sort of a matter of trying things on and saying 'I like that. I like the way that looks.' And you develop a character from what's in the script and what you have on.
