Delays in the Excavation for the New Wing

Unexpected delays have occured in the excavation for the new wing foundation. Work proceeded as planned--ahead of schedule, in fact--until further digging revealed curious openings in the ground about 3 meters below the surface in the area farthest away from the original building.

Geologists were immediately consulted, and examined these openings carefully.  They said the openings were not natural, and suggested that archeologists be contacted. Archeologists from local colleges agreed that the holes were artificial, but could offer no suggestions of when they were constructed or who built them. Eventually, one of them said only one university in the country was likely to have anyone with expertise in such unnatural pits, and that was Miskatonic University.

The archeology department of Miskatonic University responded enthusiastically when contacted, and surprised everyone by immediately sending a team of researchers to examine our anomalous earth-openings.  They arrived dressed and equipped for an inspection, leaping down into the muddy excavation site and studying the holes.

They examined the site until the light failed. Their initial evaluation is that the holes are part of a pre-Columbian tunnel system pre-dating even the earliest Indian settlements in the area. They also made the rather curious comment that it would be wise for work crews to cease work well before darkness each day, but would not elaborate on their reasons. Their investigation continues.
